Meeting Updates

Brief update on meeting with Dr. Amy Flatten (APS Director of International Affairs), Prof. Xiaoxing Xi (Temple), Prof. Maria Spiropulu (Caltech; chair APS FIP).

Prof. Xiaoxing Xi (Temple) met with me, Amy Flatten, and Maria Spiropulu on the sideline of the APS March meeting. I would like to report that the meeting was useful and constructive.

APS is working diligently on the sensitive issues involved, and is actively engaging the US governmental agencies. As we are all aware, this type of matters involving issues of industrial/economic espionage, academic freedom, and wrongful accusations have great ramifications for international scientific exchange between China and the US, and between the US and countries worldwide.

Therefore, we must be patient, while carefully and persistently bring our concerns to the forefront.  I came away with the understanding that APS is really working to help build a lasting and stronger foundation, and to try to mitigate the circumstances.  I stressed that OCPA will be a partner in this process, to help disseminate information in a timely manner to the APS and to our consituency.

Of course, only time will tell what degree of success will be achieved.  Personally, I am hopeful and cautiously optimistic.

***Prof. Xi has informed me that 60 Minutes (CBS) will be broadcasting a segment on him and the DOJ case in the near future.  (Exact date is not known at present.)***
