2020 OCPA Awards Announcement and Report

Achievement in Asia Award (Robert T. Poe Prize)      


This year we have 8 excellent nominations for the 2020 OCPA Achievement in Asia Award (Robert T. Poe Prize). The OCPA award committee has carefully reviewed all cases and concluded to award two winners:

  • Dr. Ying Jiang (International Center for Quantum Materials, Peking University)
    For his groundbreaking experimental research on low-dimensional water and ice
  • and Dr. Yu-tin Huang (Physics Department, National Taiwan University)
    For his influential insight into scattering amplitudes and its relation to gauge theories and gravity.

The winners were selected by the following panel of physicists (in alphabetical order):

  • Tai-Chang Chiang (University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign)
  • Cheng Chin (University of Chicago)
  • Zhengtian Lu (University of Science and Technology of China)
  • Yuen-Ron Shen (UC Berkeley)
  • Nu Xu (Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory)
  • Xingjiang Zhou (Chinese Academy of Sciences)

Outstanding Young Researcher Award (Macronix Prize)

This year we have 6 excellent nominations for the 2020 OCPA Outstanding Young Researcher Award (Macronix Prize). The OCPA award committee has carefully reviewed all cases and concluded to award two winners:

  • Prof. Liang Wu (University of Pennsylvania)
    For his pioneering experiments exploring topological materials with terahertz and nonlinear spectroscopy
  • Prof. Yuanming Lu (Ohio State University)
    For his leading theoretical investigation on the topological phases in strongly interacting systems.

 The winners were selected by the following panel of physicists (in alphabetical order):

  • Cheng Chin (University of Chicago)
  • Nu Xu (Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory)
  • Hui Zhai (Tsinghua University)
  • Fuchun Zhang (Chinese Academic of Sciences)

Outstanding Dissertation Award (ODA)

This year we have 5 excellent nominations for the 2020 OCPA Outstanding Dissertation Award. The OCPA award committee has carefully reviewed all cases and concluded to award three winners: 

  • Dr. Yanan Dai (Ph.D. in Physics, University of Pittsburgh)
    Thesis title: Imaging Light with Photoelectrons on the Nano-Femto Scale 
  • Dr. Xiaojuan Ni (Ph.D. in Materials Science and Engineering, University of Utah)
    Thesis title: GROWTH, ELECTRONIC, AND TRANSPORT PROPERTIES OF 2D MATERIALS BEYOND GRAPHENE
  • Dr. Dihao Wang (Ph.D. in Biochemistry, Ohio State University)
    Thesis title: Ultrafast Dynamics and Photochemical Mechanisms of Bilin-based Photoreceptors

 The winners were selected by the following panel of physicists (in alphabetical order):

  • Albert Chang (Duke University)
  • Cheng Chin (University of Chicago)
  • Linda Young (Argonne National Laboratory)
  • Vincent Liu (University of Pittsburgh)
